Toolox 46 is a hardened and tempered tool steel designed for minimum residual stresses. This material therefore has very good dimensional stability during machining. Toolox 46 is based on the successful Toolox 44, but with a modified chemical composition that makes it the perfect choice for the most demanding hot-work tool applications. Despite its high hardness, machining can be carried out without any problems using standard carbide tools.

hardness
(Guaranteed value)
HBW 430 – 490 (corresponds to approx. 42.5 – 49 HRC)
Impact toughness
(Guaranteed value)
Test temperature
20°C

For Toolox 46 round bar (forged):
Impact toughness:
Charpy-V min. 11 J (20°C), measured on longitudinal specimens at ¼ of the material thickness.

For Toolox 46 flat forged material:
Impact toughness:
Charpy-V min. 11 J (20°C), measured on longitudinal specimens at ¼ of the material thickness.

For Toolox 46 rolled plate flat material:
Impact toughness:
Charpy-V min. 8 J (20°C), measured on transverse specimens at ¼ of the material thickness.

Dimensions round material: Ø 151 to 353 mm
Rolled plate: 60 to 130 mm
Forged flat bars: 150 to 320 mm
Condition on delivery Hardened and tempered at min. 590°C.
Free of mill scale, no weld repairs.
Heat treatment Toolox 46 is not intended for further heat treatment. If this material is subjected to further heat treatment above 590°C after delivery, the properties are no longer guaranteed. Nitriding or coating is possible at temperatures below 590°C.
Testing Hardness test: According to EN ISO 6506-1
Round bar: Hardness is measured on a milled surface, with indentations positioned as for impact testing according to EN 10 083.
Plates: Hardness tested on a milled surface 0,5 – 2 mm below the plate surface.
Forgings: Hardness is measured on a milled surface 12,5 mm below the ordered surface.
Impact testing: According to EN 10 025, EN ISO 148 with 2 mm striker.
Tolerances Round bar: EN 10 060
Plates: According to Toolox thickness guarantee (tighter than EN 10 029 Class C), length and width in accordance with EN 10 029
Forgings: EN 10 029
Surface properties Plates: According to EN 10 163-2 Class B, Subclass 3
Forgings: sawn / turned / milled
Flatness Plates: According to Toolox flatness guarantees (tighter than EN 10 029 Class N, steel type L)
